Troon Football Club are delighted to unveil our new management team to lead us into the forthcoming season.
Jimmy Kirkwood will return as Manager, following two years "upstairs" as club General Manager, to lead the team into a season of First Division football where promotion back to the Premier League is the ultimate goal.
Jimmy was first appointed into the Portland Park hotseat in 2011 after a season as Assistant Manager, and is the most successful Manager in our history. His first spell in charge saw our meteoric rise from second bottom of the ADL to the higher echelons of the Super League. ADL promotion, the First Division Championship, an Ayrshire Cup, the West of Scotland Cup Final & 6th position in the Super League Premier Division before work commitments at the time forced him to step aside.
Jimmy's successor in the General Manager position is a returning club legend, John Redmond.
"Yogi" first walked into the Portland Park hotseat 25 years ago in 1992, enjoying an incredible period with promotions and cups in a successful 9 year spell as Manager. The club saw another renaissance when he returned for a second spell in 2008, and he has recently enjoyed a period with Craigmark as well as doing some media work. His main roles will be the overseeing of the coaching at the club, development of our youth teams & a bit of scouting as well.
Matt Maley is appointed the club's new Assistant Manager.
A former Junior player himself, Matt has a well decorated coaching career under his belt in the pro-youth level with a plethora of experience at Celtic & Dundee United, many years at Pro-Youth at Kilmarnock and Under 20s Manager at Stranraer until his departure from Stair Park earlier this summer. He will come on board as Jimmy's number 2 and his main responsibility will be on the training ground as well as match days.
Another "weel-kent face" is Neil McGowan, who will return to Portland Park as First Team Coach.
Having made a subtle transition from player to coach at Troon a few seasons past before joining Irvine Meadow last summer, "Gowser" is predominantly charged with shoring up our defence & our threat from set-plays. He is sure to make an impact on the playing side as well this season, and will be registered as a back-up defender.
Rounding off our coaching staff is highly-respected goalkeeping coach Andy Smyth.
Former Partick Thistle goalkeeper Andy joined us in the summer of 2013 after a glory-laden spell at Irvine Meadow & has been credited in aiding the careers of Mick Wardrope, Darren Johnston and Marty Fraser among others
Chairman Jim Kirkwood was pleased with the appointments. "I am delighted to announce the newly appointed management team and welcome back Jimmy for his second spell as Manager at the club, and to John who just cant stay away! Both know the ethos of the club and what we are trying to achieve. Their experience, combined with the coaching skills and knowledge of the game that Matt and Neil have, makes us confident that they will bring the best out of our squad this season and I am looking forward to working with them."
The club are looking forward to the new season & look forward to your support behind the management team!
